We began our adventures of living full-time on the road on April 3, 1998 when Alice and I retired from SBE, Inc. in San Ramon, California. At that time our dear friend Misty traveled with us.
In April we headed south, visiting family and Thousand Trails parks along the way to go to our first Escapade in Victorville. From there is was on south to Palm Desert to visit my sister.
In May we left Palm Desert and went to Las Vegas for the Interop show, then on to Verde Valley TTN in AZ. Sam went back to SBE for a short visit, then we headed to Carlsbad Caverns, spending a night in the Benson AZ SKP Coop Park and a night in the Deming NM SKP Rainbow Park on the way. After Carlsbad we headed into Texas to visit with Mike Strang. Just after we arrived there we heard that Sam's mother, Wilma Penny, had passed away, so we hurriedly flew back to California for the services, finally returning to our travels on June 3.
Then in June we continued our trip. We purchased a new cellphone and started getting back on track. We changed our plans about going to the east coast -- we decided to visit relatives instead in Oklahoma, St Louis area, and Kansas. After those visits, we headed to South Dakota to see Rushmore and Devil's Tower, then on to Wyoming and Montana heading to Great Falls for July fourth.
July found us in Great Falls, MT for the Escapees Fun Days. From there we drove to University of Idaho for the Life on Wheels Conference, and then started our trek through Washington. In Washington we visited two Thousand Trails Preserves: Little Diamond TTN near Spokane and Leavenworth TTN in the central Cascades upriver from Leavenworth. At the end of the month we journeyed west to visit Mount Vernon TTN preserve.
At the start of August we visited TTN parks to the west of the Cascades. We went by Sequim to add a Pac Brake to the truck and visited the SKP park at Chimacum. Then it was down to Chehalis TTN. We found out why the people of Washington put up with the other eleven months of the year.
In September we moved down to Ranier TTN park. From there we visited Mt. Ranier National Park and Mt. St. Helens. Both were spectacular. Then it was into Oregon for visits to the Pacific City TTN park, Bend TTN park, and finally South Jetty TTN park. Our daughter Deb joined us for part of the time and we had a delightful time.
Finally at the beginning of October we drove back into California. We spent time around Sacramento and the Bay Area, visiting with old friends and family.
November was also spent in the Bay Area, mostly staying in TTN parks. It was during this period that Misty became ill and had major surgery to remove a tumor on her spleen.
Then in the December log we tell about more visits with family and friends as we prepared for the holidays. After Christmas we headed further south to Palm Desert where it was warmer to end the year.
